Senior Program Activities If you would like to see a program offered that is not yet available, please feel free to call the Parks and Recreation building at 497-3003 to make the suggestion. We welcome all ideas. Sun style Tai Chi by Joan Stevens This hour-long weekly class is perfect for anyone who wants a light fitness program, especially those with arthritis or who are de-conditioned. In this series of monthly classes participants will learn six basic movements and six advanced movements and then will perform them in reverse for a total of 24 movements. For additional information see www.TaiChiProductions.com An ancient Chinese practice, Tai Chi is considered an internal martial art. It also includes the practice of Chi Gong or deep breathing exercises. Movements are gentle, fluid, circular, relaxed and slow. Similar to other fitness forms, classes begin and end with warm ups and cool downs. Developed by a physician and recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, Tai Chi for Healthy Joints is well-researched with positive outcomes documented. It improves strength, flexibility and overall fitness as well as posture, balance and integration of body, mind, and spirit. The class is for all fitness levels and will meet one day a week. Light Senior Aerobics By Joan Stevens Fit and Strong! is an evidence based fitness and health education program developed by the University of Illinois at Chicago primarily for osteoarthritis patients. For more information see: www.fitandstrong.org The exercise class includes 60 minutes of exercise: 20 minutes each of flexibility, aerobics and strength. The flexibility portion includes the warm up and cool down. The aerobics portion includes walking, interval training and aerobics dance moves. The strength portion utilizes ankle weights in graduated weights from 1 – 10 pounds, resist-bands and/or tubes and covers both upper and lower body with an emphasis on lower body to improve strength and balance to prevent falls. Rail Trail Walk To start we will meet at the Parks and Recreation building parking lot. We can begin with a half mile or mile walk depending on the needs of the group. As our fitness capabilities improve more time can be added. We can all so begin the walks at the Hillsborough County Court House by Malloy Ford. Bring a friend and enjoy the environment. Every Thursday 9:00 – 10:30 am the Recreation department will host group play. This will be a self guided process with individuals creating their own matches in a round robins format. Cross Country Skiing / Snowshoeing We have opened Barnard Park walking track area for XC skiing and snowshoeing. This gives the user a measure quater mile loop which is easily accessed from the parking lot. We ask that all snowshoers use the indside of the track and XC skiers use the out side. Conditions will vary depending on the weather. Season: Dec. - Mar. Fee: Free Registration Deadline: Closed for the Season Day(s) Monday - Sunday Time: Sun up to Sun Set
