Why Does GPD Have a Chaplain?

Chaplains are routinely called upon to respond to scenes with law enforcement officers where a critical incident or death has occurred; to offer emotional and spiritual support to traumatized and grieving family members. This service requires an incredible amount of observation, sensitivity, and composure, on top of years of training and preparation for this work.

Because of the unique identity and position that the Chaplain holds, people in crisis identify me as a person who is safe, trustworthy, compassionate, and grounded. I can offer a sense of stability in a moment of utter chaos and unpredictability. Additionally, I can serve as a helpful resource and point of contact for any necessary follow-up or referrals for assistance.

When on a call for service, I am not there to investigate, to pass judgment, to distract or disrupt the officers. I aim to assist as requested and complement the work that they perform. What I can offer is a calming presence, my attention, a connection to local resources, and immediate short term pastoral care and counsel, if requested. My desire is to help get you the assistance that you need and request; regardless of your gender, race, religion, age, lifestyle, residency and circumstances. All Chaplaincy services are available at no cost to the individuals, families, town, or department.

What Can a Chaplain Assist Me With?

There is but one ultimate commission for a Chaplain; that through our presence, a sense of comfort, order, and peace can be brought into a time of chaos.

My goal, when working alongside our police officers out in the community, is to offer an additional helping hand, through the ministry of presence. As I walk alongside each individual (or family), I can help to assure them that they don’t have to face their pain or challenging circumstances alone.

As an ordained member of the clergy and member of the Goffstown Police Department, this is the unique service that I can provide for people in distress. It is not that I can take the pain away or solve all their problems, but that I can offer the peaceful presence of comfort, hope, understanding, and encouragement amidst the chaos.
